Hardware 1.0 – Lab 1.2

Identification of System Information

This lab will help you to be able to identify system information and hardware configuration.

1.  Note any manufacturing information on the case, such as, model, components, or serial numbers.  Now check that manufactures website and determine standard hardware configuration for this particular model.  They should also have driver files that could be downloaded if needed.  Sometime if you have to re-install the operating system you might need some hardware drivers to fully activate some features, such as, sound, network, or video.

2.  Note any other features or connections like CDROM/DVD, USB, firewire, network, sound, video, SD card slots, etc.

3.  What type of mouse connection do you have?   USB or PS/2   What are the differences and advantages of each?

4.  Click on Start>Settings>Control Panel>Performance Maintenance>System.  What operating system, version number, service pack, CPU, and RAM amount do you find.  Click on the Advance tab and look the Visual Effects settings.  There is a setting for best performance that could be checked to help overall performance.  Some of the Windows visual effects can stress or burden performance of some computers.  You might also look through some of the Tabs and settings.
